Learning how to ride is not just about learning how to control the bike, it is just as much about knowing how to be safe on the road. The theory test is designed to test your ability to read the road, you will learn about road signs, general road etiquette as well how to identify and anticipate hazards.

Today's roads are much busier than they used to be, as a newly qualified rider you are far more likely to be involved in an accident than more experienced riders. As many of 1 in 5 newly qualified drivers and riders have an accident in the first year, people in the 17 to 25 age range have the highest risk.

The theory test has two parts the multiple choice section and the hazard perception section. BOTH parts must be passed in the same session to pass your theory test.

The multiple choice section has 50 questions chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions, questions are answered by touching the screen, you have the option to skip questions and return to them later. You must answer 43 or more correct within the 57 minute time limit to pass this section of the test.

Immediately after you have answered the multiple-choice questions you will watch 14 video clips each lasting 1 minute. Each video clip will shows potential hazards involving road users, pedestrians or even the road conditions. There are 15 hazards meaning one clip will have 2 hazards and the other 13 will only have 1, you can score up to 5 points on each hazard depending on how fast you identify them, you will need to score 44 out of 75 to pass this section of the test.

You will find out the result of the test as soon as you return to the waiting room, if you pass you will receive a pass certificate which you should keep in a safe place as you will need this for both parts of your practical test.
